They say if you want something done you have to do it yourself and that's pretty true with regards to our forum skin. No one has done anything about the skin since we upgraded the forum software more than a year ago. (The old skin wasn't compatible with the new software.)

As I mentioned at the end of the Red Alert 3 Trailer news post I've been working on a new blue theme myself. I've just made it available to registered members. Members can change their forum skin using the dropdown menu at the bottom left of the forums.

It's still a work in progress so some of the colors and images don't match. When it is complete it will be set as the default forum theme. Until then guests won't be able to view it.

I changed my mind. It's the default now and will continue to be edited until it is finished.

The Download Database has been re-opened

I'd like to apologise for the recent technical issues, we had acouple of technical issues on a server update at the start of this month which has now all been recitified by our brilliant server team so sorry about the shacky uptime at the start of this month.

The Download Database was merely a permissions issue which has now been corrected as well.

Network - Not So Shiny Files :( -- Posted On 3 August 2008

Our loyal viewers may have noticed that earlier today/yesterday the site was down for a lengthy period of time.

Well to get to the point, now that the site is back up it has become apparent that the entire Download Database is broken. Every. Last. File.

So until such a time as this has been rectified, the Download Database has been taken offline.

Network - Shiny New Files! -- Posted On 29 July 2008

I've just finished uploading several new files that you'll surely enjoy if you have Zero Hour.

First up for the Macintosh users, I've added the English, German, and French Mac patches for Generals/Zero Hour. They're combo patches that will update Generals to version 1.04 and Zero Hour to version 1.02 with the same executable.
(And because they patch both games I added them to both the Generals and the Zero Hour section despite them being the same files.)
I also added the German Low-Violence Edition of patch 1.08 for Generals.

Up next, after years of intense anticipation, is the newly released mod on the block that everyone is talking about, Cold War Crisis.

Also I finally got off my fat lazy arse long enough to add the 0.951 update for the ShockwaveZero Hour mod.



You can now get the original 0.95 installer and apply the 0.951 patch. Alternatively you can get the non-installer version for Macs or if you have troubles with the installer version, then manually apply the appropriate 0.951 patch.

Network - Red Alert 3 Beta Test -- Posted On 27 July 2008

Well folks the Red Alert 3 beta test is rolling out as I type this (check your inbox for EA's email if you signed up) so I've just added a RA3 Public Beta Test section to our Image Gallery. And I totally came up with the idea myself instead of copying the idea from chickendippers at CnCWorld.

Now I myself am not blessed enough to have the RA3 beta (okay also I don't want it and never signed up for it) so I can't submit images myself. This means we need YOU to help create our content!



Doing so is really simple. Just hit the New Image button at the top or bottom right side of the gallery in the RA3 Public Beta section. From there it is as easy as making a forum post with an attachment. Give it a title Caption, a quick Description, and browse to your screenshot to upload, then hit Post Image! As with Generals/Tiberium Wars your screenshots are saved in your My Documents folder under My Documents/Red Alert 3 Beta/Screenshots. They're saved as .bmp (bitmap) which is a lossless format we don't allow in the gallery due to large file sizes. So you can just open the screenshot with MSPaint (or any program that can save as .jpg) and re-save them as .jpg/.jpeg or .png.

Now with that said, only registered forum members can submit images, and the images will be hidden until a moderator approves them. This is to prevent random bots from uploading porn or other dirty things to our gallery.

Applicants would be writing blogs, news, and articles, would preferably have ties to multiple community sites for news dissemination, and have a strong grasp of typing in the English language.

Modding - A Letter to EALA from Modders -- Posted On 22 July 2008

Ladies and gentlemen, we all know it is inevitable that most games will eventually fall out of the lime light and into the depths of the past. However, the enjoyment one can get out of a game can be prolonged if users are able to make their own content. User-driven content prolongs replayability and keeps a game alive longer than it's shelf life would be without it or post-release support.

To paraphrase the program director for the Game Art and Design and the Visual and Game Programming majors at my college (who has 10 years of industry experience and multiple shipped titles):

User-driven content is what people are starting to go after and is a trend in the industry that is only expanding. It is a part of the market that is changing very rapidly and customizability is the future.

To add on to what he said:

For years modders have been ahead of this user-driven content trend and only now is the rest of the industry starting to catch up with us.


So as C&C modders here at CnC Source (and collectively across the community) we present the following letter to EA and the community at large:

QUOTE
Dear Command & Conquer community and developers,


As fans of Command & Conquer games, especially the Kane's Wrath expansion for Command & Conquer 3, we are uniting the community in a new public campaign to highlight the extreme importance of a mod SDK for Kane's Wrath. As you know, modifications extend the life of the game, allowing fans to make their own rules and even support the game beyond the game's original life expectancy.


We are aware that the Electronic Arts Los Angeles RTS team is interested in creating a mod SDK for the game, but we are concerned about the lack of progress. We understand there are many things to do and not much time, but we request the developers increase the priority of the mod SDK, particularly over fixes for the world builder. While the map making tool is not as friendly as it was supposed to be, fans are able to create maps. At the moment, fans are unable to create modifications using the new features from Kane's Wrath at all. This prevents fans from making mods that use the new features from the Kane's Wrath engine, such as the fixed APC, mechapede code, global conquest mode, etc. The lack of a mod SDK is also a major obstacle for the creation of partial conversions, balance mods and expansion mods based on Kane's Wrath, which is a very traditional kind of modification done to any C&C game. Though sometimes lacking the flair of a total conversion, these mods do very well and are generally very popular with fans who merely want to see the community add to EA's work, not replace it.


We, some of the C&C community webmasters, promoted polls on our sites about this issue. From the results, we can only conclude that a Kane's Wrath mod SDK should have a high priority after whatever fixes are necessary for the game. You can see our polls at Project Perfect Mod, Thundermods, CnC Generals World, CnCHQ.de, CNCNZ and Planet CnC.


We reiterate that the need for a mod SDK is urgent--the sooner it is completed, the better! It is extremely important for the future of the community for both Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath. The longer it takes to be done, the fewer people will be interested in modding, and, as consequence, the game will become obsolete even faster. We hope that this mod SDK will reflect EA's promised emphasis on aftermarket product support, and not echo past errors such as the Generals Ladder Kit, the 1.03 patch for the First Decade, and other support software and patches that arrived late or not at all. For all fans out there, please express your words of support in a reply below. For the devs, think carefully about this proposal, as we believe it can benefit both the game and the community. This campaign is supported by at least each of the following sites and their respective communities:

Tiberian News - Kane's Wrath Patch Now Out -- Posted On 10 July 2008

The first patch for Kane's Wrath is now out. You can get it through the auto updater or directly EA's site. We'll have it mirrored this weekend*.

*Note: We would have had it mirrored however the download script is being noncompliant with the FTP so for now just get it from the EA site or auto-updater.

Sorry for the downtime we experienced today/yesterday (this also affected hosted mods). It would seem our host didn't pay the server bill "on time" or there was a miscommunication about the payment. Either way though, the payment has gone through and we're up again.

Tiberian News - Kane's Wrath Patch 1 Delay -- Posted On 7 July 2008

Well they ran into a bug while doing the QA testing for Kane's Wrath patch 1.01. Apparently the bug was severe enough that it required elimination which delayed the process even longer than it has already been delayed.

The patch is now in the final stretch and should be released soon. We'll mirror it up when it is out.

In the meantime, Verdu himself posted a letter of apology to the fans. With a new support team being formed, post-release support for present, future, and hopefully past C&C titles should improve in the future.
